Rare slipper shaped copper vessels designed to warm (or mull) beer. The home-made ale or cider was poured into a stone mug by the 18th century Innkeeper then placed in the circular end of the Copper Muller. The tapered part or 'shoe' is gently pushed into the glowing embers of the fire until it is considered warm enough to drink.
Warm beer was thought to be healthier than cold especially during the long harsh winters. The writer Charles Dickens mentions ale mulled in the fire in 'The Old Curiosity Shop' and the Oliver Cromwell character demonstrates an Ale Warmer in 'The Man For All Seasons' movie.
The unusual shape also prevented the precious liquid from spilling when pulled out of the hot fire. Or if the drinker is intoxicated and unsteady on his feet!
